5 Tips to Improve Hand Safety in the Workplace

Your safety and wellbeing at work are essential.

You use your hand’s thousands of times every day without even thinking about it, especially at work.

We here at The Glove Company, believe that your hands are one of your most precious and valuable tools. That’s why we think everyone should know a few simple tips to improve hand safety in the workplace.

What is Hand Safety?

Hand Safety is the protection of your hands from various incidental and intentional hazards, through the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and risk assessment.

5 Tips to Improve Hand Safety in the Workplace

1.   Before you start taking hand safety seriously, you must first talk to your safety officer, supervisor or manager. Your Workplace Health and Safety Officer will have the most up to date advice and recommendations for your specific work situation.

2.    If you work in an industrial, mining or other industry that requires you to wear PPE, make sure your workplace is supplying you with the PPE that you need to wear and ensure that you and your mates are wearing the PPE every single day.

3.   It is important that your PPE is the correct size for you. When it comes to hand safety, it is super important that your gloves fit correctly. If you are unsure if you have the right glove size, check out our handy Glove Sizing Guide.

4.   As a general rule, most PPE is reusable; however, when it comes to hand safety on average PPE is spilt between disposable gloves PPE and reusable gloves PPE. It is vital to know if your workplace requires you to wear disposable gloves or reusable gloves. Using disposable gloves more than once will result in a higher likelihood of hand injuries. And using reusable gloves when you should be wearing disposable gloves will lead to lower dexterity and more chances of your hands getting injured.

5.   Make sure any equipment, machinery, tools, or chemicals have not expired, and if they have inform your safety advisor as soon as possible. Always ask for help using new equipment, machinery tools or chemicals. Ask your safety advisor for the most up to date versions of equipment manuals and chemical specification sheets. That way, the chances of injuring your hands while doing your job are less.
